Estonia was among the first countries in Europe to launch the EU Digital COVID Certificate (EUDCC) and has done so with great success.

The launch of the EU Digital COVID Certificate eases travel restrictions to and from Estonia in the hopes of salvaging what is left of the tourism industry in the summer season.

How does the EU Digital COVID Certificate work in Estonia?

The EUDCC went live nearly a month ahead of schedule in Estonia and many other EU member states. The remaining participants officially joined the program on July 1st.

The Estonia COVID pass app that was tested in 2020, the Immuunsuspass, has been replaced by the standard EU Digital COVID Certificate.

People from across Europe can enter Estonia with the EU COVID pass. However, authorities suggest travelers contact border authorities ahead of any trip to ensure ease of movement.

Estonia is allowing travel from various greenlit countries. But the country imposed self-isolation requirements on non-vaccinated travelers from Denmark and Latvia.

Estonia is not planning on entering into travel corridors with countries outside of the EU or EEA at this time.

How to get the Estonia COVID certificate

Citizens of Estonia who have received the vaccine can simply log on to the e-patient portal Digilugu and follow the prompts to generate their certificate.

The certificate features the holder’s basic information and is available in both English and Estonian. The information includes the individual’s date of birth, full name, the issuing state, and the kind of vaccine that has been obtained.

Three types of certificates are available and authenticated by unique QR codes:

  • EU Digital COVID Vaccination Certificate
  • EU Digital COVID Recovery Certificate
  • EU Digital COVID Test Certificate

Once generated, the certificate can be printed or displayed on a mobile device for authentication.

Current COVID-19 health situation in Estonia

The country remained relatively COVID-free until November 2020 and reached a peak of over 1500 new cases per day in mid-March.

The COVID-19 infection rate in Estonia currently hovers around 300 new cases per day, a slight rise due to the spread of the Delta variant. Just under 1,300 people have died from COVID-19 in Estonia.

The vaccine rollout is moving swiftly along. Over 1,240,000 doses have been administered. Over 40% of the Estonian population is fully vaccinated.
