Argentina’s COVID passports used regionally

Argentina COVID passport

Last update: August 27th, 2021.

Restrictions are in place in most major cities. Argentina’s COVID passports are used to secure access to various non-essential services and public spaces.

Argentina has digitized its vaccine certificates. Citizens can download their COVID pass QR codes for regional use in Buenos Aires, La Rioja, Catamarca and Salta.

There is no national COVID pass in Argentina. City certificates cannot be used for travel, but citizens are urged to download the QR codes for local use.

How do COVID certificates work in Argentina?

Argentinians who have received their first vaccine dose can download a digital vaccine certificate from the Mi Argentina app.

My Argentina is used to display driving licenses and car registrations. It will now also display a QR code showing an individual’s vaccination status.

When the secure and unique QR code is scanned, it displays the following information:

  • Name and surname
  • ID number
  • Vaccine data: name, batch, and number of doses
  • Location the vaccine was received

Argentina’s COVID passes aim to increase access to public spaces – like restaurants, shops and gyms – by 20%.

Buenos Aires COVID pass issued via Whatsapp

The city of Buenos Aires has also started to issue digital vaccine certificates to its vaccinated residents.

Residents can request their QR code via Whatsapp by sending the words “Certificado Covid” to 11-5050-0147.

After following instructions, they will receive their QR code which will display basic health and vaccine information.

The Buenos Aires COVID pass is not a vaccine passport and cannot be used for travel.

La Rioja COVID certificate for restaurants

The northwestern province of La Rioja is requiring COVID vaccine certificates for gastronomical venues.

This means that La Riojan customers will need to prove full vaccination to dine at certain restaurants and to enter bars and clubs.

Governor Ricardo Quintela explained that this was an incentive to get La Rioja’s population vaccinated against COVID-19.

Catamarca vaccine certificate for public transport

The province of Catamarca has recently started to use COVID certificates for entrance to recreational facilities.

In Catamarca, COVID certificates are also required for public transportation and activities with a high risk of transmission.

A spokesperson confirmed that “in all cases, access to the rights of people from vulnerable groups must be guaranteed”, in an effort to minmize COVID pass discrimination.

Salta COVID certificates for entertainment

In the North of Argentina, the province of Salta has also implemented various restrictions on unvaccinated residents.

Citizens need vaccine certificates proving at least one dose to enter event rooms, casinos, and catamarans.

Where are vaccine passports banned in Argentina?

Various provinces have confirmed that they will not use COVID certificates to implement restrictions.

The Argentinian provinces of San Juan, Mendoza, and Chubut, have all confirmed that they are against green passes.

The Neuquén government also announced that it will not enforce vaccine certificate restrictions because the city’s vaccination rate is already sufficient.

The governor of La Pampa has said that they will consider COVID passes once all citizens have equal access to vaccines to avoid discrimination.
